The Occupant Detection System (ODS) in your Kia K4 utilizes advanced sensors to classify occupants. While the system is programmed to recognize an adult-sized passenger, variations in physique, posture, or weight distribution can sometimes lead the Kia K4 to classify a smaller adult as a child. Conversely, a larger child who has transitioned out of a Child Restraint System (CRS) might occasionally be identified as an adult depending on how they are positioned on the seat cushion.

To maximize safety, we strongly recommend that children do not ride in the front passenger seat. For your protection, never attempt to install a CRS in the front passenger position of your Kia K4. If a child between the ages of 12 months and 12 years (with or without a CRS) occupies the front seat, you may observe the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Indicator icon showing passenger airbag status in the Kia K4) indicator toggling on and off; this is a normal operational behavior of the system's detection logic.

WARNING

  • Do not install a child restraint seat if the front passenger seat is heavily soaked with liquids, as moisture can interfere with the ODS weight sensors in the Kia K4.

  • Do not attempt to modify the ODS hardware or software. Unauthorized alterations can damage the system, potentially preventing proper airbag deployment during a collision.

WARNING

  • Avoid using aftermarket seat covers that fully cover the seat surface or installing unauthorized passenger seat heaters, as these can obscure the sensor mat and degrade the accuracy of the Kia K4 occupant detection system.

  • After performing any deep cleaning or steam treatment on the interior of your Kia K4, ensure the passenger seat is completely dry. Once dried, verify that both the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator warning light) and the SRS warning lights are operating normally according to the system check sequence.

  • Any technical service, calibration, or maintenance involving the Kia K4 passenger seat or the ODS components must be performed exclusively by an authorized Kia dealership.

  • If the passenger seat is removed or reinstalled for any repair work, you must verify normal system operation by checking the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( SRS warning light display on the Kia K4 dashboard) and SRS warning lights both with and without a passenger seated.

  • When the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Visual indicator showing the passenger airbag is currently turned off) symbol is illuminated, the passenger airbag system is locked and will not deploy. If the symbol is not illuminated, the system is primed and will operate when necessary during a collision event.

  • Always ensure the Kia K4 front passenger seat is free of heavy, non-occupant objects that could mimic the weight of a person, as this may incorrectly influence the airbag status indicator.

To ensure the safety of all occupants, never attempt to modify, remove, or replace the front passenger seat of your Kia K4. Additionally, do not place or attach any unauthorized items—such as blankets, aftermarket seat covers, or non-factory seat heaters—to the front passenger seat. These accessories can interfere with the sensitivity of the seat-based sensors, which may adversely affect the performance of the Occupant Detection System (ODS).

WARNING

Occupant Detection System

Riding in an improper or slouched position can interfere with the Kia K4 Occupant Detection System, which may inadvertently result in the deactivation of the front passenger airbag. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are aware of and adhere to the proper seating guidelines detailed in this owner’s manual. Maintaining a correct posture is vital for the Kia K4 safety systems to function as intended during a collision.

Warning graphic illustrating the danger of placing heavy objects in the seatback pocket of the Kia K4 passenger seat
  • Do not place heavy loads, bags, or items in the front passenger seatback pocket or directly on the cushion of the Kia K4 passenger seat.

Graphic prohibiting resting feet on the Kia K4 front passenger seatback
  • Do not place your feet on the front passenger seatback, as this puts undue pressure on the internal sensors.

Safety instruction graphic warning against sitting with hips shifted forward on the seat
  • Never sit with your hips shifted toward the front edge of the seat; always sit fully back in the seat cushion.

Graphic warning against excessively reclining the front passenger seat in the Kia K4
  • Never excessively recline the Kia K4 front passenger seatback, as this disrupts occupant positioning and system accuracy.

Graphic warning against placing feet on the instrument panel of the Kia K4
  • Never place your feet on the instrument panel, as this removes your weight from the seat sensors and poses extreme danger during airbag deployment.

Instructional graphic showing proper seating and warning against leaning on the door or console
  • Never lean against the door panel or center console.

  • Never sit on one side of the Kia K4 passenger seat; always remain centered.

Warning illustration regarding liquid spills and electronic devices on the Kia K4 passenger seat
  • Do not use car seat accessories, such as thick blankets or heavy aftermarket cushions, that obscure the surface of the Kia K4 seat.

  • Do not place electronic devices (e.g., laptops, tablets) or heavy items (e.g., large quantities of water bottles) on the passenger seat, as they may be misinterpreted as human weight.

  • Wet passenger seat: Do not spill liquids on the seat. Spilled liquid can penetrate the internal sensors and trigger an airbag warning light or system malfunction. If a spill occurs, ensure the seat is completely dried before operating your Kia K4.

Figure 1. Proper position
Diagram showing the recommended upright and centered seating position in the Kia K4 for optimal airbag function

If an adult passenger is seated in the front passenger seat of your Kia K4 and the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Indicator warning light signaling the passenger airbag is deactivated in the Kia K4) indicator remains illuminated, please switch the ENGINE START/STOP button to the OFF position. Ask the passenger to assume a correct, upright posture—sitting squarely on the seat cushion with their back against the seatback, seat belt fastened, legs extended comfortably, and feet resting firmly on the floor. After the passenger has properly repositioned, restart the Kia K4. This sequence allows the ODS to recalibrate and detect the occupant, enabling the front passenger airbag for optimal protection.

Should the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Warning icon indicating the front passenger airbag remains disabled in the Kia K4) indicator persist after these efforts, we strongly advise the passenger to relocate to the rear seat for their safety.

WARNING

PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Visual alert showing the passenger airbag status as OFF in the Kia K4 dashboard console) light

Do not permit an adult passenger to remain in the front seat if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Dashboard indicator light signaling that the Kia K4 front passenger airbag is inactive) indicator is illuminated, as this confirms the airbag will not deploy during a collision. Promptly request that the passenger adjust their seating position. Failure to maintain a correct posture may lead the system to keep the airbag deactivated, preventing critical safety deployment in an accident. If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Overhead console indicator showing the passenger airbag is currently OFF in the Kia K4) indicator stays illuminated after proper repositioning and a vehicle restart, the passenger must move to the rear seat, as the front airbag will not function.

NOTE

The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( Indicator status icon for the Kia K4 Supplemental Restraint System) indicator will not illuminate immediately upon seating. The Kia K4 occupant detection sensor requires several seconds to accurately classify the occupant. Furthermore, if you turn the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position after the vehicle has been off for approximately 3 minutes, the system will automatically initiate its activation cycle.

  • Although your Kia K4 is equipped with a sophisticated Occupant Detection System, you should never attempt to install a Child Restraint System (CRS) in the front passenger seat. An inflating airbag can strike a child restraint with immense force, resulting in catastrophic injury or death.

For maximum safety, all children under the age of 13 should be seated in the rear of the Kia K4. Children who have outgrown specialized child restraints should utilize the vehicle's standard lap/shoulder belts. Regardless of the collision type, statistics consistently show that children are safest when properly secured in the rear seating positions of your vehicle.

In the unlikely event that the ODS malfunctions, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag warning light will illuminate on the Kia K4 instrument panel, as the passenger's front airbag is tethered to the ODS status. If the ODS suffers a failure, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ( SRS system warning light indicating an ODS malfunction in the Kia K4) indicator will not appear. In this specific scenario, the passenger's front airbag will deploy during a frontal impact, even if the front seat is completely unoccupied. If you notice any inconsistencies with these warning lights, please visit an authorized Kia service center immediately to have the system inspected.
